May Term 2020: California Politics Student Trip
The California Politics May Term trip to Sacramento, CA is an interactive and impactful experience where students apply "textbook knowledge" to "real-world politics." When you support this project, you're helping ease the financial burden of the trip for students who otherwise wouldn't be able to attend. Many deserving and interested students are deterred from taking this class because of the $450 course fee that covers the flight, ground transportation, hotel, and some meals. For some, a trip to Sacramento included in their class is the first time they've been on a plane, and for many it's the first time they've been to a state capital.
During their time in Sacramento, students will engage with alumni across a range of professions inside and outside the state Capitol: lawmakers and staff, consultants and lobbyists, fellows, state appointees and civil servants, non-profit managers, and more. They will watch floor sessions, attend committee hearings, sit with legislators, interview staff, and get a taste of citizen politics as it plays out in the halls and on Capitol grounds (usually there are demonstrations galore). One of our highlights is an alumni mixer, with support from Poli Sci Dept./Dr. Art Svenson, where students and alumni establish new connections, and alumni reconnect with each other.
For students of politics, there is no substitute for experiencing first-hand the process of lawmaking and policy making. Applying concepts, or moving from basic knowledge to higher level reasoning, requires a level of personal investment that this trip is able to capture well. In addition to visualizing and learning about the process differently, our students establish relationships with recent alumni and their eyes are opened to new career and internship possibilities. Support this project today and help our students take part in this transformative experience!
